After watching the Hulu series (and having to wait for what seems like forever for the next season to come out), I wanted to know more about Lucy and Stephen’s doomed love story. I’ve always been interested in the reading the novel’s my favorite TV shows or films are based on. Unfortunately, I’m not ahead of the curve— I’m usually the type to watch before reading.
Obviously, there are similarities between the novel and series, but Megan Oppenheimer (show runner) has certainly taken many creative liberties with the show’s storyline.
In the novel, I felt the dynamic between Lucy and Steven was less intense. Clearly, the show has been significantly dramatized, but hey, this makes for great TV. I liked some of the background information and additional characters we got from the novel, but ultimately I much prefer the Hulu series. I enjoyed the inclusion of new relationships like Pippa and Diana, Evan and Bri (during college), and Wrigley and Drew.
I wish we would have seen more confrontation between Lucy and Stephen re Macy’s death— this was a major story point in the show, but not touched upon much until the conclusion of the book.
Of course, it’s because of Carola Lovering's page turning story, that we’ve all become hooked on the series.
